The primary goal is to encourage energy conservation in the building through proper use of the internal heating and cooling systems or by upgrading those systems to energy efficient systems.

The energy auditors evaluate the building with the help of professional equipment such as blower doors and infra red cameras. They would ideally be taught how to use those equipments in the training.

Thereafter they will suggest feasible solutions and correct ways to improve the efficiency of the heating and cooling systems thus reducing the cost of maintenance in the longer run. Energy audit revolves around many areas such as the building envelope which includes walls, ceilings, floors, windows, doors, roofs, etc.

The resistance to heat flow is measured or estimated on every component of the building envelope. This is done through thermographer. Any kind of leakages or infiltration of air identified.

These problems would strongly affect the performance. One major reason could be due to poor window construction or the poor quality of door seals and ducts. Professionals who get Energy Audit training will be able to assess the efficiency of the mechanical systems, their programming and physical conditions.

The systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning equipment i.e. the HVAC systems and the thermostats are analyzed by the energy auditor.

They will then include a written report giving the estimated energy usage in a given climate and for a given period of time. These results are observed over a period of time. They are shared with the BPI and a constant improvement has to be the outcome of such observations. These buildings when show a steady improvement in efficiency, they are rated accordingly by the BPI as Platinum, Gold or Silver rated buildings.
